Who is attacking homs

Israel struck targets near the Syrian cities of Homs and Tartus on Monday, wounding two soldiers and causing material damage, Syrian state media reported.

The Syrian military said in a statement that the attack came from north of Beirut and that air defenses managed to shoot down most of the missiles used. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the strikes took place, adding that the attacks in Homs targeted military sites tied to the regime and Iranian militias.

Western intelligence sources have said Israel's stepped-up strikes on Syria since last year are part of a shadow war approved by the United States.

The strikes are also part of an anti-Iran policy that in the past two years has undermined Iran's extensive military power without starting a major increase in hostilities. Subscribe for our daily curated newsletter to receive the latest exclusive Reuters coverage delivered to your inbox.

On Monday, Syria said it had intercepted an attack on Aleppo. Homs province adjoins Lebanon, where the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shia Hezbollah group holds sway along the rugged border area. Israeli air attacks reportedly targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guard bases and weapons plant in al-Safira area of Aleppo. The army said in a statement released on state television there were civilian losses without elaborating on details.
