Can you breed alpacas and llamas

This huarizo fabric is a knitted fabric that is usually blended with other fibres like polyesters to improve the quality. The major use of fibre by huarizo is in the garment industry that makes the huarizo a lovable animal. Fleece made by this fibre is used in the manufacturing of knitwear etc. Huarizo has a natural crimp which means that it has a natural elasticity that is breathable and warm. The most interesting thing about huarizo is the fertility of this animal. It is generally considered as a sterile wild animal that has no ability to reproduce itself.

But recent studies conducted at the University of Minnesota Rochester observed that it may be possible to preserve fertility by doing some genetic modifications. A crossbreed of alpacas and llamas in the shape of huarizo did solve many problems for the people who wanted to have all the characters of bot species in an individual animal.

Huarizo has all the major characters of fibre, body shape, body size, face shape, and load-carrying abilities. I have done my graduation in Agriculture and Animal breeding. Relevant to Farm Desire as a research writer and data recorder. If you have a smaller acreage, it might make more sense to get alpacas or at least more alpacas to llamas. Other than food and space, their needs are largely the same. They both like a grass-fed diet and hay in the winter.

For more information about what to feed llamas and alpacas, check out my other post: the complete guide to feeding llamas and alpacas. Both llamas and alpacas spit usually only when threatened , with llamas being slightly more likely to do so. They should both have at least a 3-sided shelter, especially in cold and wet conditions.

One big difference between the two comes down to their fleeces. On the other hand, llama fleece has a coarse outer layer. Regardless, both animals should still be shorn once a year for upkeep and to prevent overheating in the warmer months. Overall, alpacas can be gentler since llamas are slightly more prone to spitting and aggression.

Llamas are known to be more independent and sometimes uncooperative. Alpacas often are friendly and get along with their herd. However, this is a generalization, and both species are very often friendly. If you rescue a llama or alpaca, make sure to observe their behavior before and after introducing them to the herd. This will help prevent incompatibility and competitive issues, especially in the beginning. Just like with any animal, friendliness and aggression depend on nature and nurture.

Many new owners will counter that geldings and wethers are kept with females in other livestock species like horses, sheep, and goats.

What needs to be understood, however, is that llamas and alpacas breed like no other traditional livestock. Alpacas and llamas have a hard, cartilaginous tip to their penis, a penis that actually penetrates into the uterus doing coitus. During intercourse, the corkscrewing penis rakes the lining of the tract, opening it to infection. If a female alpaca is pregnant, penile penetration into the uterus can cause her to abort.

Photographs of the female reproductive tract taken after a breeding show that it looks like raw hamburger — females often bleed even after a single, planned breeding. In other species, the penis is shorter, softer, and does not damage the female. Add to this that intromission can easily exceed thirty minutes without owner intervention. Since alpacas breed while cushed — and males can take substantial time to find the appropriate opening — breedings on dirt or less savory substrates can introduce a significant amount of debris into the female.

Now imagine a gelding sneaking breedings night after night. Overbreeding is the number one cause of infertility in alpacas and llamas. But my gelding never breeds my girls, some owners will exclaim — I would see it!

Except alpacas really do prefer to breed under cover of darkness. It was a huge eye-opener literally : geldings that we believed were living peaceably with females WERE in fact attempting to breed them relentlessly in the wee hours of the night.

One nearly killed his half sister.
